Review of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

I read this book about two weeks ago and I finished it in two days!! It was that good. Like I had promised, I want to do as short review on it, mostly pointing out how the book affected me.

The Alchemist, is a novel about a young shepherd boy in pursuit of his destiny. He goes through ups and downs, faces trials and comes out triumphant. I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone that has not read the book so I will keep mum on the details.

What did I learn from this book? Loads! For starters, I learnt that I should pursue my dreams. You know that particular thing that you’ve been wanting to do for years and years, or that vision of yourself that you had as a child? Why let it go? Go towards it instead of away from it. When I want to fulfil or have a strong, nagging urge to do something, I will not rest until it is done. For example, ever since I was a child, I loved fashion but I did not have the courage or the will-power to pursue it. It was not until last year that I finally put my foot down and started this blog. I consider this my first step towards knowing what my love for elegance and style means. Follow your heart even if it means moving away from your comfort zone.

Live in the moment. This was one of my new year’s resolutions. There is no point in worrying about the past (which you can’t change) and the future (which in most cases you have no power over). Enjoy the now! If you are having lunch with friends, commit your whole self, body and mind, to that moment. You will find that you pay more attention to the little details on hand and will have a memorable time.

Everything happens for a reason. When you leave the house and miss the bus you normally take and are forced to take a later one, maybe you were being prevented from a bad experience. How many times has a little inner voice told you to go this way when you wanted to go the other way? It pays to listen to that little voice. Don’t complain endlessly when something goes wrong. You are being moulded to be a stronger, more resourceful person.
