I’ve been a closeted fan of velvet ever since the trend made an appearance in the fashion world. I have to confess that in the past, I have associated velvet with past fashion trends that were anything but flattering.
However, with the “modernising” of this trend, I have come to love it. For instance, over Christmas, I imagined (because I was in no position to shop, budget constraints) how a deep red or dark green velvet dress styled with minimal accessories would look amazing.
Fast-forward a couple of months, I finally got my hands on this black velvet dress. I fell in love instantly and bought it telling myself that if it didn’t fit I would lose some weight to make it fit. Long story short, the dress fits although it is a bit snug in some parts but that won’t stop me from wearing it. I’m learning how to embrace my various “unflattering” bulges and wear what I like with confidence.
Because I’m still waiting for the weather to cool down enough for me to wear this heavier fabric out, I thought I’d look for inspiration on how to style it.
Below are three ways to style a velvet dress.
For this look, I thought I’d let the style of the dress stand out by keeping my accessories minimal. I paired it with a simple brass necklace, hoop earrings and purple block heel sandals to add some colour.
For look two I imagined running errands on those cooler days so I added this khaki green jacket whose sleeves I rolled up. I love these dusty pink sneakers and always think they pair so well with khaki green, so they were an obvious choice. To complete the outfit, I added a beaded necklace and smaller silver hoop earrings.
Look three called for a different style of layering. A peach fitted t-shirt layered underneath the dress turned it into an everyday dress. Sandals, a beaded necklace and silver hoop earrings completed this outfit.
