Continuing with last month’s theme, I’ve decided to do a feature this month on good grooming. This will be posted every Thursday throughout the month of October. I believe good grooming is an essential part of being elegant and stylish. You can’t possibly wear good clothes and not be well groomed and expect to be admired.
The last four weeks have seen as tackle three issues relating to Good Grooming. From your hair, nails to your general cleanliness, we have seen that you may be wearing the latest designer suits, expensive shoes and carrying a bag that turns others green with envy, but if these little details are neglected, all your efforts are in vain.
In today’s post, I want to briefly look at the matter of oral hygiene. My dad is a dentist by profession, so in our house, matters to do with teeth and general mouth cleanliness were ingrained in us from the the time we could understand what was going on. I sometimes take it for granted that everybody knows how to brush their teeth, floss and rinse their mouth with mouth wash. But this is not the case.
I remember when we were younger, my dad would buy us kids toothbrushes, stand with us at the bathroom sink and teach us to brush our teeth properly. In the course of time, I became lazy and started taking shortcuts. After some time, I noticed my teeth getting too sensitive and I had to get back to what I had been taught earlier.
Teeth can be brushed in different motions. I prefer the circular motion because it doesn’t injure my gums. Some people brush up and down or sideways. Brush your gums, inside of your cheeks and tongue as well.
It’s adviced to brush your teeth after every meal, but with the demands of every day life, it might not be possible to do so. Thus brush every morning and night to have extra fresh breath.
For your teeth to be clean and healthy, you need to have a good toothbrush with strong enough bristles to clean between your teeth. Toothbrushes come in soft, medium, hard and extra hard strenghths. My dad tells us to use medium but it’s different from person to person.
A toothbrush should be replaced every 3 months to ensure you are not using bristles that are worn out or bent.
I don’t use these two frequently but I do know people who do.
Mouthwash gives you extra fresh breath and flossing ensures you remove any particles from between your teeth.
I have found the solution to lasting fresh breath. Ok I know I’m not the first to discover that if you want to keep your mouth and breath fresh the whole day, just chew a chiclet or two. I also discovered that chewing gum keeps me alert and prevents me from snacking unnecessarily.
I know someone who told me that their smile changed because of browning of their teeth. From that time onwards, every time I brush my teeth, I smile to ensure that my smile doesn’t change for whatever reason. Browning of teeth can be caused by too many minerals in the water, smoking or poor oral hygiene among other causes. Some of these can be controlled or avoided. Let your beautiful smile always stand out with careful oral hygiene.

One of the things I promised myself I would do, ever since this pandemic started and life slowed down, is that I would dress up every single day. Granted, I had nowhere to go, but putting on an outfit, no matter how simple, uplifted my…
