One of my goals for 2018 is to focus on positivity even when logic dictated otherwise. For the most part, I have done quite well but there are those days when I can’t seem to remember to smile let alone to be grateful for my life. It was in one of those moments, when I’m grappling for a something, no matter how small, to make me smile that I came up with this list.
Below are 5 things to remind yourself everyday that are sure to get you out of whatever funk you might be in.
1. You are beautifully and wonderfully made.
If you don’t think this about yourself, stand in front of the mirror every morning and tell yourself how beautiful you are. Forget about anything that has ever been said to you to the contrary. Avoid comparing yourself to others. See your own beauty and don’t wait for others to tell you that you are beautiful.
2. God wants you to live a full, happy life.
I read this one day when I was feeling particularly blue. I couldn’t stop thinking about all those things that were/had gone wrong in my life. I wondered what there was left to feel happy about. Then I read this and I thought, when God created me, he didn’t want me to perpetually have a long face or not enjoy my life. God wants me to be happy, to enjoy my life. He allows hardships to remind me to pray harder, to strive to grow in faith and to remember that He directs my life. Even though I might not see what there is to be happy about, if I look hard enough, there is at least one thing to be happy about every day. These hardships won’t last forever. They will pass.
3. You deserve to love and to be loved.
First, fall in love with yourself. If you don’t love yourself, you cannot expect others to love you. Secondly, the right person for you is out there. Just be patient and he will walk into your life at the appointed time. In the meantime, don’t be afraid to experience life. Cherish the relationships you have now with your friends and family.
4. It’s okay to choose you.
Remember your welfare is more important than anything else. You must take care of yourself in order to take care of other people. So take time out, get enough rest, treat yourself, pursue your hobbies, try new things and most importantly, if something doesn’t feel right, say no and let it go.
5. You deserve to achieve your dreams.
I remember one time telling someone that I wanted to go for further studies and their reaction was so negative that I was completely thrown. I wondered why they couldn’t support my dreams. I learnt that first and foremost, I need to believe in my own dreams, have a sense of conviction about them and to be careful about who I speak to about them because not everyone wants to see you succeed. Now I remind myself, everyday, of all those things I used to dream about when I was younger, I speak to God about them and I work towards them celebrating my progress no matter how slowly it might appear to be.
